BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN INNOVATION AND THE FEDERAL MISSION WITH AUTHORITY
Written By: Joanna Kellog, Federal Business Development Lead, DataRobot
Joanna Kellogg serves as the Federal Business Development Lead at DataRobot, bringing expertise in supporting government and defense organizations through AI/ML modernization. As a critical contributor within DataRobot’s federal division, she serves as a vital link between cutting-edge technology and national security objectives, overseeing strategic outreach for the DoD, IC, and FedCiv sectors.
Joanna’s approach prioritizes operational readiness and scalability, ensuring that AI strategies deliver tangible impact on the front lines. Her background- combining a B.S. from Bentley University with advanced technical training from MIT Professional Education- allows her to translate complex machine learning requirements into actionable federal strategies.
Breaking into the federal space without a military background or a decade of government service is like learning two incredibly complex languages at once. I didn’t come from a “Fed” background, but I decided to take the challenge head-on. It wasn’t just about keeping up with the breakneck speed of the AI landscape; it was about decoding the “alphabet soup” of government procurement and the unique, high-stakes mission cultures of various agencies.
Starting from scratch in such a specialized world was a massive learning curve, but it actually became a secret weapon. Because I wasn’t bound by “the way it’s always been done,” I could look at mission-critical problems with a fresh set of eyes. It allowed me to act as a bridge, aligning cutting-edge commercial innovation with the rigorous operational requirements and mission objectives of the DoD and civilian agencies.
I’ll be honest: being a woman in a space dominated by men and veteran networks felt intimidating at first. However, navigating this space with unapologetic confidence is a distinct strategic advantage. In a room of similar backgrounds, a different perspective naturally stands out. By backing that visibility with deep technical expertise and a relentless command of federal knowledge, you shift the focus from your background to your results.
At the end of the day, success in this sector isn’t about tenure; it’s about a relentless willingness to learn and the discipline to out-prepare the room. By taking full command of both the AI landscape and federal nuances, you transcend the role of an outsider. That level of preparation is what transforms a non-traditional background into a strategic weapon, ensuring you are driving the mission forward.
