As we come to the end of Cybersecurity Awareness month, I wanted to call attention to the impending Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) requirements and what the potential implications are for commercial off the shelf (COTS) software companies.

Why are government purchasing thresholds important? How can these purchasing thresholds as defined in the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) be leveraged to inform your sales strategy as we approach the end of the federal fiscal year? Let’s start by looking at the federal micro-purchase threshold (MPT).

The term ‘compliance’ as it relates to cloud computing can elicit a wide variety of reactions. Some Developers cringe when they hear the word as they anticipate limited technology choices. Program Managers have images of project delays and increased complexity. Security and Compliance Officers see a framework for protecting the agency, its mission, and  associated data (and maybe keeping their names off of the evening news).

When we look back on 2020 and early 2021, I believe we’ll see that COVID-19 had significant impact on the growth of cloud computing at government agencies as well. Whether it’s SaaS-based collaboration services or the use of cloud computing infrastructure as a service (IaaS), government agencies increasingly turn to the cloud as part of their IT modernization efforts toward being ‘Cloud Smart’.

The Federal government spends more money on Information Technology than any other Fortune 500 company in the U.S., with an estimated FY20 IT budget exceeding $85B.  Congress is responsible for passing an annual budget that allocates money to each Agency for the fiscal year that runs from October 1st to September 30th.
