EMBRACING THE MADNESS: USING OPENAI'S DEEP RESEARCH TO BUILD A BRACKET

Written By: Chet Hayes, Vertosoft CTO

Ah, March Madness—a time when basketballs bounce unpredictably, brackets crumble, and our data models face their annual trial by fire. Reflecting on our past attempts to predict the NCAA tournament outcomes, it’s evident that the “madness” often outpaced our analytics. But this year, we decided to try something different in our use of AI to create the perfect bracket.

Our Predictive Comedy of Errors

In previous years, our confidence in data-driven predictions was, shall we say, ambitious. Armed with machine learning algorithms and historical data, we ventured into the bracket battlefield, only to find our models performing on par with a coin flip. By the Sweet 16, our predictions were as busted as, well, most people’s brackets.

The AI Assist: Enter OpenAI’s Deep Research

After years of our predictive models falling short, we wondered—could OpenAI’s Deep Research models crack the code of March Madness? We decided to test it out. Using a simple prompt to provide some guidelines, we asked a ChatGPT o1 Model enabled with Deep Research to build a predictive model and generate a bracket for the 2025 tournament. The model analyzed historical trends, team performance metrics, and countless variables we may have overlooked. The question is—can a generative AI model bring us the ultimate bracket, or would it succumb to the same chaotic upsets as its predecessors?

Looking Ahead: The Ultimate Experiment

For now, all we can do is watch, wait, and track how our AI-generated bracket performs. What we do know is that the o1 Model successfully developed a predictive model and created a bracket that, on the surface, appears highly plausible. The AI considered historical trends, player performance, and numerous variables to generate selections that make statistical sense. Regardless of the final outcome, this experiment showcases how deep research models and AI have only begun to scratch the surface of what is possible in predictive analytics. As AI technology continues to evolve, the potential applications extend far beyond March Madness—perhaps next, we’ll be using it to predict market trends, election outcomes, or even the weather with unprecedented accuracy. Stay tuned—whether this is a breakthrough moment or another cautionary tale, we’ll be sharing our results and insights as the tournament unfolds.

Our AI-Generated Bracket: Now, We Wait

With our AI-assisted bracket in hand, the real test begins. While we can analyze past trends and refine our approach, the true measure of success will unfold as the tournament progresses. Will our AI-powered selections defy the odds and dominate the standings, or will March Madness prove once again that no model can fully predict the chaos? Only time will tell.

May your brackets be ever in your favor, and may your data always be clean and well-governed.
