EVOLVING TRENDS AND FUTURE OUTLOOK: CONSOLIDATION AND CONVERGENCE IN THE DISTRIBUTION ECOSYSTEM

Dual Distribution Blog Series 15

As we look ahead, it’s clear that distribution strategies in the public sector are continuing to evolve in response to changing procurement behaviors, new mandates, and the broader technology landscape. Companies should keep these emerging trends in mind to refine their dual distribution approach for the future:

In recent years, the traditional lines between large commercial IT distributors and specialized public sector aggregators have blurred. Major global distributors have acquired public sector-focused firms to bolster their government business (e.g. Arrow Electronics acquired ImmixGroup in 2015, Tech Data acquired DLT Solutions in 2019. This means your once “independent” distribution partners might become part of the same parent company or significantly change capabilities overnight. As a vendor, keep an eye on such industry moves; you may find that adding a second distributor is more important now than ever before. Specialized value-driven distributors are keen to onboard emerging tech for public sector, and a dual approach lets you harness at least two evolving platforms. Just be prepared to adapt if one of your distributor’s merges with another; maintain flexibility in your agreements to pivot if necessary (yet another reason to have two – you have options if one gets swallowed up).
