EVOLVING TRENDS AND FUTURE OUTLOOK: GROWTH OF DIGITAL MARKETPLACES AND PROCUREMENT PLATFORMS
Government procurement is slowly embracing online marketplaces and streamlined buying portals. The GSA has experimented with commercial e-commerce portals for micro-purchases, and agencies increasingly use vehicles like SEWP, NASA’s online quoting system, and even vendor-specific cloud marketplaces (e.g. AWS Marketplace for Government, Azure Government Marketplace) to acquire solutions quickly. This shift means your distribution strategy might extend beyond traditional relationships to integrations with digital procurement platforms. Distributors are adapting by creating their own online storefronts for government buyers. In the near future, a government customer might be able to log into a marketplace, choose your product, and select from multiple authorized distributors or resellers for fulfillment on the spot. Vendors should encourage their distributors to participate in these e-marketplaces and ensure their products are listed and visible for self-service procurement. Dual distribution again increases your odds – if one distributor is a first mover on a new marketplace contract, your product gets on there through them, while the second might cover another platform. Essentially, be ready to plug into multiple digital channels. Procurement agility will be defined by how quickly a government buyer can find and buy your solution online with minimal paperwork. Work with your distributors on digital enablement, such as API-based quote systems or ensuring your product info is consistent across all electronic catalogs. Also, adapt your marketing – government buyers may start to compare options on screens, so having both distributors present (with consistent pricing) can actually instill confidence that they’re getting a competitive choice.
